The Pukeko The pukeko Is a native bird of New Zealand. They are part of the rail family which includes the Weka and Takahe. The pukeko is found mostly in swampy areas in New Zealand. They also live near charming beaches. One more idea of where they live is by mangrove trees. The swamp is also covered with pollution. The Colour of the pukekos feathers are indigo and black. The beak is as black as blood and the shield on the beak is red. The leg colour is ruby red. The pukekos eyes are also red. The shield on the beak is what protects him. It's legs make it move. The pukeko eats insects, frogs, eggs and smaller birds. It gets around with its skinny stick legs. The father pukeko and the mother pukeko take turns to sit on the eggs so they can keep the eggs warm and safe. One interesting idea about the baby pukeko is that they can walk and swim when they are 1 year old.
